Year 9 AMS Spaghetti Bridge Building Competition

Today, our year 9 AMS students competed in the 2023 Varsity College Spaghetti Bridge Building Competition. Students were tasked with researching, designing and building the strongest bridge possible from spaghetti and hot glue.

Once students had researched and designed their bridge, they got to use hot glue guns to execute their creative vision. All students were actively engaged and enjoyed the activity thoroughly.

The students’ bridges were tested with the Vernier Structures and Materials Tester at the end of the day, results of which can be found below, compiled by Mathematics teacher Mr Deeley.

  • “Team Charlie and Liam” consisting of Charlie Thomson and Liam Johnston had to have their bridge broken to be able to fit the tester instruments, however did receive the strongest recorded result at 83.55 Newtons.
  • “The Triangles” consisting of Anna Perszke, Keito Hokibara, Ariena Aziz and Honora Rowen-Clarke had the highest result that fit within the specifications of the task and tester instruments (61.99 Newtons)

While there was little bit of controversy regarding the winners of the strength category, both teams far exceeded their competition and should both be congratulated!

The winner of the popular vote category (Based on Bridge Appearance and Bridge/Team name):

  • “Aldi Bridge” consisting of Emily Wong, Noor Ahad and Sydney won the popular vote – voted by fellow students

The winner of the teacher vote category:

  • “Spaghetti and Meatballs” consisting of Mikayla Webb, Amaya Ryall, Manoline Ramesh and Grace Lang won the teacher vote for demonstrating well-researched bridge design and implementing a design that shows understanding of the engineering and science behind bridge construction
